Cal outscores Pacific 6-2

Berkeley, Calif. The Pacific field hockey team dropped a 6-2 decision to the California Golden Bears on Friday, Sept. 21.

The defeat dropped the Tigers to 1-7 on the season, while Cal moved to 7-1.

Cal opening the scoring just 12 seconds into the game as Jennifer Crane scored an unassisted goal. Pacific confronted their rival head on as they scored the next goal of the game at the 11:03 minute mark. Sophomore Kim Keyawa (Chico, Calif.) scored on an assist from junior Erica Nestle (San Jose, Calif.).

However, Cal responded unpleasantly with four consecutive goals. Cal netted two more goals in the first half when Kellie York redirected a pass from Crane at the 19:35 minute mark. Later in the half, Crane made it 3-1 with a goal at the 30:31 minute mark.

Cal's scoring barrage continued in the second half as Natalie Nurnberg and Christina McGrath each netted goals.

Trailing 5-1, Pacific lifted senior goalkeeper Valerie Niles (San Jose, Calif.) in favor of freshman Lauren Woods (Oceanside, Calif.).

Five minutes later, Keyawa squared up and then crushed the ball in the goal at the 60:16 minute mark on an assist from freshman Hayley Hull (San Diego, Calif.).

Cal, however, scored the final goal of the game at the 66:00 minute mark as Caitlin Byrne put the Bears ahead 6-2.

Woods notched one save after allowing one goal to creep by her body armor.

The Tigers took a total of 10 shots while the Bears attempted 15. Pacific took a total of six penalty corners throughout the game as Cal took five.

Junior Kedibone Leubane (Capetown, South Africa) took a total of five shots against Cal's durable defense. Senior Katie Fixsen (Vista, Calif.) and junior Erica Nestle (San Jose, Calif.) faced up to the defense to take one shot each as well.

The field hockey team will return to their own stomping grounds on Sunday, Sept. 30 against Stanford in Stockton, Calif. The game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. PT.
