Pacific Takes Two From San Francisco

May 8, 2007

Box Score

San Francisco, Calif. - Finishing their suspended contest from over two months ago the Pacific baseball team captured the rescheduled game in booming fashion over San Francisco (USF) with a walk-off home run by sophomore Zach Chamberlin (San Rafael, Calif.). They followed that up with an impressive 7-2 win over the Dons in the regularly scheduled contest on Tuesday, May 8.

With the wins the Tigers moved to 13-37 on the year while USF fell to 24-28 overall.

The Tigers got on the board first in the top of the third inning as Pacific's starting pitcher, junior Jason Haar (San Diego, Calif.), helped himself at the plate with a two-run single.

Freshman Josh Powers (Elk Grove, Calif.) drew a leadoff walk to start the Tigers' rally. Sophomore Joe Oliveira (San Diego, Calif.) followed with a single through the left side to put runners at first and second. Two outs later, junior Justin Baum (La Mesa, Calif.) loaded the bases by working a walk. That brought Haar to the plate, who rifled the first pitch of his at-bat into right field to plate Powers and Oliveira. Back-to-back walks to freshman Mike Walker (Marysville, Calif.) and junior Brett Manning (Boulder, Colo.) forced home Baum as the Tigers stretched their lead to 3-0 by the end of the inning.

Haar and the Tigers worked themselves out of a jam in the bottom of the fifth inning as San Francisco put runners on second and third with just one out when Brian Chavez singled, then Luke Sommer roped a double into the right field corner. Haar, however, induced a soft line out to short from San Francisco leadoff man Joey Railey, then got out the jam by getting Johnnie Knoble to ground out to third base.

Pacific added to its lead in the top of the seventh inning as the Tigers got a leadoff single from Oliveira, followed by a one out single to left-center by sophomore Zach Chamberlin (San Rafael, Calif.) to put runners at the corners. After Baum drew his second walk of the game to load the bases, junior Greg Murray (El Cerrito, Calif.) reached on an error by the Dons' Railey, allowing Oliveira to score, giving the Tigers a 4-0 lead.

The Tigers continued to take advantage of San Francisco mistakes in the top of the eighth inning as Pacific added three runs on two hits and three Dons' errors. Manning and Powers started the inning by reaching on errors, then Oliveira blooped a single to right-center. Oliveira's ball got past the right fielder, allowing Manning to score and putting runners at second and third. One out later, Chamberlin blasted a two-run double off the left field wall to boost Pacific's lead to 7-0.

Haar (2-2) picked up the win as he did not allow a run in six innings on the mound. Haar held San Francisco to just five hits and a walk, while striking out four.

San Francisco's Daniel Morales (1-1) suffered the loss as he allowed two runs on two hits and two walks in two innings.

Oliveria led the Tigers with three hits and three runs scored in the game, while Haar and Chamberlin each had two RBI.

Pacific returns to the diamond on Friday, May 11 as Pacific host UC Irvine in the first of a three game series at Klein Family Field. The first pitch of the contest on Friday is scheduled for 2 p.m.
