Tigers Fall to UC Riverside Despite Impressive Comeback, 8-7

Riverside, Calif. - Despite coming back from a six run deficit over the course of the last four innings and tying the game in the top of the ninth, the Pacific baseball team fell to UC Riverside by a score of 8-7 in the final game of this weekend's three game series in Riverside, Calif. With the loss the Tigers fell to a record of 11-37-1 on the season, while the Highlanders improved to 30-18 on the year.

Although the Tigers scored the first run of the game in the top of the first when Matt Fuson (Lodi, Calif.) was driven in on a sacrifice fly by Justin Baum (La Mesa, Calif.), UC Riverside scored seven runs in the first four innings to take an early lead.

Pacific started chipping away at the Highlander lead in the fifth inning when Kurt Wideman (Fallbrook, Calif.) was hit by a pitch and eventually made his way around to score.

The Tigers added another run in the sixth inning when Fuson recorded his second single of the game, advanced on a fielder's choice that was bobbled by Riverside and scored on another throwing error committed by the Highlanders' defense.

In the seventh inning Brett Manning (Boulder, Colo.), Josh Powers (Elk Grove, Calif.), and Joe Oliveira (San Diego, Calif.) recorded three consecutive singles to score Manning and Powers and to bring the game within two runs. Then, after both teams went scoreless in the eighth, the Tigers added two unearned runs in the ninth inning to tie the game up at 7-7.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Tigers returned the favor by allowing Jeff Dunbar to lead off the inning of with a double to left center for the Highlanders. He later scored the winning run on a throwing error by the Tigers defense.

David Rowse (Pleasanton, Calif.) suffered the loss for the Tigers, while Joe Kelly was credited with the win for UC Riverside. Pacific scored seven runs on nine hits in the game, committing four errors. The Highlanders scored eight runs on thirteen hits, while committing three errors.

The Tigers will next be in action on May 8, when they take on USF at 3:00 p.m. in San Francisco, Calif.
