Northridge, Calif. - A complete game performance from senior Curtis Pasma (Madera, Calif.) led the Pacific baseball team to a 7-1 win over Cal State Northrdige on Friday, May 25.
The win lifted the Tigers to 15-42 on the season and 2-17 in the Big West Conference. The Matadors, meanwhile, fell to 14-40 overall and 2-17 in conference play.
The Tigers fell behind 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning thanks to the hustle of Matador second baseman Jonathan Sakuri. After reaching on a lead-off single, Sakuri stole second, moved to third on fly out, then scored on a wild pitch.
The score remained 1-0 until the top of the fourth inning, when Pacific plated three unearned runs on three hits and an error. Junior Greg Murray (El Cerrito, Calif.) got the Tigers going as he reached first base on a throwing error by Cal State Northridge shortstop Jason Dabbs. Following a fly out, Murray moved to second on a high hoping ground out from freshman Mike Walker (Marysville, Calif.). With two outs in the inning, senior Clint Eastman (Pleasanton, Calif.) knotted the game at 1-1 with an RBI double into right-center field.
Sophomore Joe Oliveira (San Diego, Calif.) continued the Tigers' rally with a sharp single into the hole on the left side. Dabbs gloved the ball and threw wildly to first, allowing Oliveira to move to second and Eastman to take third. Freshman Matt Fuson (Lodi, Calif.) followed with a two-run single up the middle to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead as both Eastman and Oliveira scampered home.
Pacific added to their lead in the top of the seventh inning as Fuson nabbed his third hit of the game with a lead-off single up the middle. Fuson moved to second on a balk, then sophomore Zach Chamberlin (San Rafael, Calif.) walked to put runners at first and second. Junior Justin Baum (La Mesa, Calif.) followed by blasting an RBI double into right-center field, making it 4-1 as Fuson scored and Chamberlin moved to third. The next Tiger batter, junior Jason Haar (San Diego, Calif.) continued the hit parade as he launched a two-run double into left-center field, plating both Chamberlin and Baum to give Pacific a 6-1 lead. One out later, Walker singled to left-center to drive home Haar and make it 7-1.
Pasma earned the victory for the Tigers as he moved to 3-6 on the season with his second complete game of the season. Pasma allowed one run on three hits and four walks in nine innings.
Cal State Northridge starter Chuck Fick suffered his seventh loss of the season (0-7) as he allowed seven runs (four earned) on nine hits and four walks in six innings.
Fuson led the Tigers at the plate as he finished the day 3-for-4 with two RBI.
The Tigers and Matadors continue their three-game series on Saturday, May 26 at 1 p.m. at Matador Field.
