Stanford, Calif. - An eight-run sixth inning proved to be the undoing for the Pacific baseball team as the Tigers suffered a 10-5 loss to Stanford on Sunday, May 20.
With the loss the Tigers dropped to 14-42 on the season, while Stanford moved to 24-28 overall.
Both teams missed an opportunity to score in the first inning as Pacific and Stanford each got back-to-back singles. The Tigers squandered their chance due to a base running error, while Pacific starter Jason Haar (San Diego, Calif.) pitched out of trouble with a pop up, a ground out and a fly out to end the Stanford threat.
After three scoreless innings, the Cardinal got on the board first in the bottom of the fourth as Cord Phelps drew a two-out walk, then Jason Castro hit a first pitch fastball over the right field wall for his first home run of the year.
The Tigers responded with a single run in the top of the sixth as freshman Matt Fuson (Lodi, Calif.) laced a one-out single through the left side. Junior Justin Baum (La Mesa, Calif.) walked to put runners on first and second, then junior Jason Haar (San Diego, Calif.) reached on an error, allowing Fuson to score.
Unfortunately the error seemed to wake up the Stanford offense as the Cardinal scored eight runs on seven hits, including a three-run home run from Michael Taylor in the bottom of the sixth inning to build a 10-1 lead.
Pacific tried to mount a late rally as the Tigers scored four runs on four hits in the eighth inning, but it was too little to late.
Haar (2-4) suffered the loss as he allowed seven runs on nine hits and two walks in 5.2 innings.
Stanford starter Eric Davis (4-2) earned the win as he allowed one run on five hits and one walk in seven innings.
Fuson led the Pacific offense as he finished 4-for-5 with two runs scored.
The Tigers conclude their 2007 season next weekend as Pacific travels to Northridge, Calif. for a three-game series with Cal State Northridge, beginning Friday, May 25 at 3 p.m.
