Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific baseball team suffered an 11-2 loss to Stanford on Saturday, May 19.
The loss dropped the Tigers to 14-41 on the season, while Stanford moved to 23-28 overall.
The Cardinal scored the first four runs of the contest as Stanford took a 1-0 lead with a single run in the top of the fourth, then added three more in the top of the sixth.
Pacific cracked the scoreboard for the first time in the bottom of the sixth as freshman Matt Fuson (Lodi, Calif.) doubled down the left field line with one out, then sophomore Zach Chamberlin (San Rafael, Calif.) singled through the right side to plate Fuson. Chamberlin's single extended his season-high hitting streak to 22 games.
The Tigers, however, missed a golden opportunity to score a few more runs and junior Justin Baum (La Mesa, Calif.) drew a walk and junior Greg Murray (El Cerrito, Calif.) reached on an error to load the bases. Unfortunately the Tigers could not capitalize as pinch hitter, sophomore Kurt Wideman (Fallbrook, Calif.) grounded out to third to end the Tigers' threat.
Pacific did not score again until the bottom of the ninth inning when the Tigers trailed 11-1. Baum and Wideman accounted for the Tigers' second run as Baum led off the ninth inning with a double into left-center, then one out later, Wideman doubled Baum home with a liner down the left field line.
Stanford hurler Jeremy Bleich (2-8) earned the victory as he tossed a complete game allowing just two runs on seven hits and two walks.
Pacific starter, sophomore Cole Akins (Seattle, Wash.), suffered the loss as he allowed four runs on six hits and a walk in six innings.
Fuson led the Pacific offense with two hits and a run scored in the contest.
Pacific and Stanford will play the rubber game of the three-game series on Sunday, May 20 at 1 p.m. in Sunken Diamond.
