Box Score
Stanford, Calif. - Behind a career-high four RBI from junior John Joines, the Pacific Tigers defeated the Stanford Cardinal, 13-7, on Friday, May 18.
With the win the Tigers moved to 14-40 on the season, while Stanford dropped to 22-28 overall.
The Tigers got on the board right out of the gate in the top of the first inning as sophomore Joe Oliveira (San Diego, Calif.) smacked a single to center to lead off the game. Oliveira went to second on a wild pitch, then moved to third on a ground out from freshman Matt Fuson (Lodi, Calif.). Sophomore Zach Chamberlin (San Rafael, Calif.) followed with an RBI single through the right side to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Chamberlin's single extended his team-high hitting streak to 21 games.
Pacific added to its lead in the bottom of the second as junior Greg Murray laced a one out single off the glove of Stanford starter Jeff Inman. Murray stole second, then one out later junior John Joines (Milpitas, Calif.) lined a single off third baseman Ryan Seawell's glove to put runners at the corners. Back-to-back RBI singles by freshman Josh Powers (Elk Grove, Calif.) and Oliveira lifted the Tigers to a 3-0 edge.
After Stanford lit the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the second, the Tigers responded with four runs on four hits and hit batter in the top of the third. Chamberlin got the Tigers rally going with a lead-off double the one hoped the left-center field wall. Junior Justin Baum (La Mesa, Calif.) bested Chamberlin's blast with an RBI double off the left-center field wall to make it 4-1. The next batter, junior Jason Haar (San Diego, Calif.), drove an RBI single into center to make it 5-1.
Murray was hit by a pitch to move Haar to second, then freshman Mike Walker (Marysville, Calif.) pushed a bunt down the third base line to put runners at second and third. Joines delivered on Walker's sacrifice as he roped a two-run single into center field to give Pacific a 7-1 lead.
Stanford came right back with two runs on three doubles in the bottom of the third, but the Tigers continued to score, adding a single run in the fifth and four more in the sixth inning.
The Tigers fourth inning tally came on a double by Murray and a two-out single to right field from Joines.
Pacific's four runs in the sixth and single run in the ninth were courtesy of two critical Stanford errors as four of the five runs were unearned.
Despite a late rally by the Cardinal, the Tigers went on to take the contest 13-7.
Pacific senior Curtis Pasma (Madera, Calif.) earned the victory as he allowed six runs on 10 hits in seven innings to move to 2-6 on the season.
Inman (4-4) suffered the loss, giving up seven runs on nine hits in two innings of work.
Joines led the Tigers' offense as he was 3-for-4 with a career-high four RBI in the game. Pacific finished with 17 hits as every Tiger had at least one hit in the contest.
The Tigers and Cardinal will continue their three-game series on Saturday, May 19 as the two teams head to Stockton as the second game will be played at 3 p.m. at Klein Family Field.
