Monterey, Calif. - The Pacific women's water polo team dropped a pair of non-conference decisions to Cal Baptist and Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday, April 7th in Monterey, Calif.
Pacific fell to Cal Baptist by a final score of 15-12 and Cal State Monterey Bay by a final count of 11-7. With the losses, Pacific falls to 5-19 on the season
Tigers freshman Sarah Harris (Cape Town, South Africa) set the school record for goals in a single season after posting 11 goals on the day, giving her 86 for the season. The previous school record belonged to Molly Smith, who posted a total of 85 goals in the 1997 season.
In game one of the day, Cal Baptist got off to a quick start, outscoring the Tigers 8-1 in the first half to take a commanding lead. The Lancers added two more in the third period to go up 10-1 before Pacific responded with a goal cutting the lead to 10-2. Following two more Cal Baptist goals, the Tigers went on a large run, scoring 10 of the games final 13 goals, but it was not enough as they fell 15-12.
Harris scored seven goals, including five in the fourth period, while sophomore Kellie Fletcher (Roseville, Calif.) added four second goals for the Tigers.
In game two against Cal State Monterey Bay, the Tigers trailed by just two at the half at 5-3, but saw the Otters score three unanswered goals to start the third period. Junior Virginia McConnell (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) scored the pull the Tigers back to within four at 8-4 before the Otters closed out the period with another goal to take a 9-4 lead into the final period.
In the final stanza, Pacific was able to outscore Cal State Monterey Bay, but only by a 3-2 margin to fall by a final count of 11-7.
Harris scored four goals to pace Pacific, with her school record tying goal coming with 3:40 remaining in the game, and the record breaker occurring with :37 seconds remaining.
Pacific is next in action on Sunday, April 15th as they travel to No. 20 Cal State Northridge to face the Matadors in their final MPSF contest of the season. The Tigers will also face head coach Megan Thomson's alma mater and former club, No. 13 ranked Hartwick, in a neutral site affair that day.
