Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific Tigers suffered a 10-5 loss to UC Davis on Friday, April 6.
With the loss the Tigers fell to 8-24-1, while UC Davis moved to 10-16.
Trailing 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Tigers got on the board by taking advantage of a three-base UC Davis error. Junior Justin Baum (La Mesa, Calif.) lifted a fly ball into deep left field, near the warning track UC Davis left fielder Michael Jacobellis allowed the ball to drop behind him and bound away. Hustling out of the box, Baum made it to third with one out in the inning. One out later, freshman Mike Walker (Marysville, Calif.) lined a single to right field to make it a 5-1 contest.
The Tigers added two more runs on two hits and an error in the bottom of the fifth. Freshman Josh Powers (Elk Grove, Calif.) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Sophomore Joe Oliveira (San Diego, Calif.) dropped a well placed bunt down the third base line to put runners at first and second. After a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, sophomore Zach Chamberlin (San Rafael, Calif.) reached on a error by the pitcher, plating Powers to cut the UC Davis lead to 5-2.
Following a pitching change by UC Davis, Baum drew a walk to load the bases. Sophomore Kurt Wideman (Fallbrook, Calif.) punched a single through the right side to plate Chamberlin and keep the bases loaded. The Tigers, however, could not push any more runs across, sending the game to the sixth at 5-3.
The Aggies added two insurance runs in the top of the sixth, but Pacific came right back in the bottom of the seventh behind sophomore Joe Oliveira (San Diego, Calif.), Baum and Wideman. Oliveira led off the inning with a double into left-center field. One out later, Baum followed with a single to left to chase home Oliveira. Baum took second as the ball was bobbled in left. The next Pacific batter, Wideman, blasted an RBI double to center to plate Baum and make it a 7-5 game.
Unfortunately that was as close as the Tigers would get. UC Davis added three more runs in the top of the eighth to seal the game, 10-5.
Baum led the Tigers' offense was three hits, two runs scored and an RBI, while junior Greg Murray (El Cerrito, Calif.) was 3-for-4 as well.
