Pacific Falls To No. 28 Long Beach State, 8-4

Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific baseball team fell to No. 28 Long Beach State, 8-4, on Saturday, April 28.

The loss dropped Pacific to 10-33-1 on the season and 0-11 in Big West Conference play. Long Beach State, meanwhile, moved to 26-14 overall and 6-2 in conference.

Solo home runs by Long Beach State's Shane Peterson in the second inning and Jason Corder in the fourth inning got the Dirtbags' offense rolling. Long Beach State went on to build a 5-0 lead as the game went into the bottom of the seventh inning.

Sophomore Kurt Wideman (Fallbrook, Calif.) started a Pacific rally in his first at-bat as he was hit by a pitch. Freshman Matt Fuson (Lodi, Calif.) lofted a double down the left field line to put runners at second and third. Senior Clint Eastman (Pleasanton, Calif.) drove in the Tigers' first run on a ground out to second base. Pinch hitter Jason Haar (San Diego, Calif.) followed with an RBI single into left-center, pulling the Tigers within three at 5-2.

The Tiger bullpen, however, could not hold the deficit to three as Long Beach State added three insurance in the eighth to pull ahead, 8-2.

Pacific notched single runs in both the eighth and the ninth inning as junior Greg Murray (El Cerrito, Calif.) delivered a sacrifice fly in the eighth and junior Justin Baum (La Mesa, Calif.) had a sacrifice fly in the ninth.

Andrew Libel (6-2) earned the win as he allowed three runs on nine hits and one walk in 7.2 innings.

Pacific starter Curtis Pasma (Madera, Calif.) allowed eight runs on 12 hits and two walks in 7.1 innings.

Fuson led the Tigers offense as he was 3-for-4 with run scored, while Baum was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Pacific and Long Beach State will conclude their three-game series on Sunday, April 29 at 1 p.m. in Klein Family Field.
