Stockton, Calif. - A seven-run third inning was too much to come back from for the Pacific baseball team as the Tigers suffered a 14-6 loss to Cal Poly on Sunday, April 1.
The Tigers fell to 7-22-1 on the season with the loss and dropped to 0-3 in Big West Conference play, while Cal Poly evened their record at 16-16 overall and moved to 3-0 in conference.
The Mustangs jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the top of the third inning as Cal Poly scored seven runs on eight hits and a hit batter. The Mustangs third inning explosion was capped by back-to-back home runs by Wes Dorrell and Bryan Kepner.
Cal Poly's Grant Desme made it an 8-0 lead in the top of the fourth as Desme launched his Big West leading 11th home run, a solo shot over the left-center field wall.
Pacific tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Tigers took advantage of a Cal Poly error. Junior Brett Manning (Boulder, Colo.) started the Pacific inning by reaching first on an error. Junior John Joines (Milpitas, Calif.) followed with a single through the right side to put runners on first and second. One out later, freshman Josh Powers (Elk Grove, Calif.) put the Tigers on the board with an RBI double down the left field line, chasing Manning in and sending Joines to third.
Trailing 8-1, sophomore Joe Oliveira (San Diego, Calif.) drew a walk to load the bases for sophomore Joey Centanni (San Diego, Calif.). Centanni drove home Joines with a short sacrifice fly to right field to make it 8-2. The next batter, junior Justin Baum (La Mesa, Calif.) put the Tigers back in the game with one swing. With a full count, Baum blasted a three-run home run over the left field wall to make it an 8-5 contest.
Unfortunately for the Tigers, the Mustangs added three insurance runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh to take a 14-5 lead.
Pacific notched a run in the ninth on an RBI single by freshman Mike Walker (Marysville, Calif.) but it wasn't enough as Pacific dropped the contest, 14-6.
Baum led the Tigers offensively as he was 1-for-3 with three RBI.
Cal Poly's Thomas Eager (5-2) nabbed the win as he allowed five unearned runs on five hits and three walks in seven innings.
Pacific starter David Hovey (San Diego, Calif.) took the loss (1-1) as he allowed six runs on eight hits in two innings.
The Tigers will be back in action on Tuesday, April 3 as Pacific travels to Reno, Nev. to take on the Nevada Wolf Pack at 5 p.m.
