Stockton, Calif. - The final game of the Pacific State Bank Tiger Classic will last much longer than expected as the contest between the Pacific Tigers and the San Francisco Dons was suspended in the top of the 13th inning due to darkness with a 5-5 score.
The Tigers and Dons will pick up the 5-5 contest entering the top of 13th prior to their May 8 meeting in San Francisco.
San Francisco took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning with an unearned run on a leadoff error, followed by three sinlges.
The Tigers came right back in the bottom of the fourth as junior Justin Baum (La Mesa, Calif.) blasted a long two-run home run over the left field wall to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead. Sophomore Joey Centanni (San Diego, Calif.) was along for the ride on Baum's home run as he reached on a fielder's choice.
The Dons tied the game with a run in the top of the fifth on back-to-back doubles, making it a 2-2 game.
Pacific reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fifth behind a solo home run from junior Greg Murray (El Cerrito, Calif.). Murray lifted a deep fly ball down the left field line to give Pacific a 3-2 lead.
The Tigers nabbed an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh as sophomore Zach Chamberlin (San Rafael, Calif.), then pinch-hitter Brett Manning (Boulder, Colo.) drew a walk. Chamberlin was off from first on the pitch called ball four to Manning, an errant throw by San Francisco catcher Jonathan Norfolk allowed Chamberlin to move to third. With runners at the corners, junior Denis Hill (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) placed a two-strike safety squeeze down the third base line to plate Chamberlin.
Trailing 4-2 in the top of the eighth, the Dons tied the game with two runs on three hits and a sacrifice fly.
Pacific continued to counter punch in the bottom of the eighth as junior Jason Haar (San Diego, Calif.) worked a one-out walk, sophomore Kurt Wideman (Fallbrook, Calif.) lined a single to center. Wideman's single chased pinch runner sophomore Erik Hamren (Coto de Caza, Calif.) to second. One out later, pinch hitter freshman Mike Walker (Marysville, Calif.) lofted a double down the left field line to push the Tigers back in front, 5-4.
San Francisco, however, had an answer in the top of the ninth inning. With two down in the inning, Dons' pinch hitter Matt Lieb tied the score with a solo home run over the right field wall.
The game remained tied through the next three innings, despite both teams having opportunities to win the contest.
Pacific will be back in action on Friday, March 9 as the Tigers look for their first road victory of the season against the Washington Huskies at 3 p.m.
