Leading 8-1 in the Eighth, Pacific Gives One Away to UCLA, 15-8

Los Angeles, Calif. - Leading 8-1 in the eighth inning, the Pacific Tigers surrendered a 14-run inning in a 15-8 loss to UCLA on Sunday, March 25.

The loss dropped the Tigers to 7-18-1 on the season, while UCLA moved to 9-14.

The Tigers took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning as sophomore Kurt Wideman (Fallbrook, Calif.) launched a three-run bomb over the left field wall. The inning began as designated hitter sophomore Joey Centanni (San Diego, Calif.) lined a single into left field. Sophomore Zach Chamberlin (San Rafael, Calif.) followed by pulling a single into right field to bring Wideman to the plate.

Chamberlin added to the lead in the top of the fourth inning with a solo home run to right.

Pacific stretched its lead to 6-0 in the top of the fifth inning as junior John Joines (Milpitas, Calif.) drew a bases loaded walk, then freshman Matt Fuson (Lodi, Calif.) drove in the Tigers' sixth run on a sacrifice fly to center.

Leading 8-1 entering the bottom of the eighth inning, three Pacific pitchers surrendered 14 runs on nine hits, three walks, two errors and a hit batter to give UCLA a 15-8 lead.

Junior Jason Haar (San Diego, Calif.) suffered the loss (1-1) allowing five runs on three hits, a walk and a hit batter.

UCLA's Jason Novak collected the win (2-0) as he held the Tigers' scoreless in 2.1 innings pitched.

Pacific and the Bruins will play the rubber game of the three game series on Monday, March 26 at 1 p.m. in Jackie Robinson Stadium.
