STOCKTON, Calif. - The No. 9 Pacific men's volleyball team improved to 10-9 overall and 7-7 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action with a 30-23, 34-32, 30-21 victory over Stanford (1-17, 1-13 MPSF) on Friday, Mar. 2, at the Alex G. Spanos Center.
Game scores were 30-23, 34-32, 30-21 in favor of the Tigers.
The Tigers came out of the gates firing against the Cardinal, leading by as many as eight before finishing the game with a seven point margin at 30-23. Game two was a fight as, with a substitution at setter the Cardinal were able to lead the majority of the game, including serving game points at 29-28 and 30-29. With the score at 32 apiece, the Tigers got back-to-back kills by junior Pekka Seppanen (Kuopio, Finland) and senior Matt Cornell (Granada Hills, Calif.) to win the game 34-32.
Game three saw Pacific take control of a game that was once tied at 13-13 as the Tigers scored 17 of the last 25 points to win going away at 30-21.
Senior middle blocker Dan Hammer (Glendale, Wisc.) had a career high 14 kills with just one error in 19 swings, good for a .684 hitting percentage, while also adding six block assists and a solo block. Cornell tallied 16 kills, six digs and four block assists, while junior middle blocker Simon Chen-Byerley hit .583 on a line of 8-1-12.
The Cardinal were led by Brandon Williams, who had 10 kills while Garrett Warner added seven block assists.
The Tigers are next in action on Sunday, March 4th as they host the Quincy Hawks. First serve is scheduled for 2pm at the Alex G. Spanos Center.
