March 2, 2007

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific baseball team dropped their fifth consecutive game as the Tigers fell to San Diego State, 6-2, on Friday, Mar. 2 on the opening day of action at the First Annual Pacific State Bank Tiger Baseball Classic.

With the loss the Tigers fell to 4-11 on the season, while San Diego State moved to 10-7 overall.

San Diego State got on the board first in the top of the second as the Aztecs took advantage of two walks and three hits to take a 2-0 lead. With two outs and a runner on third, San Diego State's number eight hitter, Matt Parker lined a single to center in his first official at-bat of the season. Parker's single plated Brian Lucas, who reached on a walk. Cameron Johnson followed with a single to right field. A walk to Pat Colwell loaded the bases, then Troy Hanzawa lineup an infield single to third base to drive in Parker.

The Aztecs added to their lead in the top of the third as third baseman Nick Romero blasted a solo home run over the left field wall, giving San Diego State a 3-0 lead.

The Tigers came back in the bottom of the third inning as Pacific took advantage of two San Diego State errors with two runs on just one hit.

Junior Denis Hill (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) reached second base on an error by the third baseman to start the inning. Hill moved to third on a sacrifice, then junior Adam Ching (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) benefited from a dropped infield pop up to take first. Junior Justin Baum (La Mesa, Calif.) followed by driving in the first Pacific run on a ground ball of San Diego State pitcher Donnie Hume's glove. Hume recovered in time to get Baum at first, but Hill scored and Ching moved to second. The next Pacific batter, sophomore Joey Centanni (San Diego, Calif.), drove in Ching with a single to center, cutting the deficit to 3-2.

Pacific's offense, however, sputtered the rest of the game. San Diego State, meanwhile, added two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to claim the contest, 6-2.

Centanni (0-4) suffered the loss on the mound, despite allowing just three runs on six hits and three walks in five innings.

Hume (3-2) picked up the win for the Aztecs, allowing two unearned runs on four hits and three walks in six innings.

The Tigers will continue to host and play in the Pacific State Bank Tiger Baseball Classic as Pacific faces No. 24 Baylor at 2 p.m.
