The Spartans came back with three runs in the top of the fourth to build a 5-1.
Once again the Tigers responded via the long ball, but this time it came from a more unfamiliar source. With two outs and and sophomore Zach Chamberlin (San Rafael, Calif.) at first base, freshman Matt Fuson (Lodi, Calif.) scorthed a fastball over the left field fence to make it a 5-3 game. It was Fuson's first career home run and only his second extra base hit.
Trailing 7-4 in the bottom of the eighth Fuson stepped to the plate and delivered once agsin. With one out, Chamberlin at second and sophomore Kurt Wideman (Fallbrook, Calif.) at first, Fuson launched a deep fly ball into left center field. Fuson just missed tying the game with his second home run of the game, instead his blast bounced off the wall as Matt settled for a two-run triple, bringing the Tigerrs within one run at 7-6.
Unfortunately the Tigers couldn't push Fuson across with the tying run and Pacific dropped to 2-11-1 in its last 14 games.
