Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific baseball team was stiffled by San Diego State pitching as the Tigers fell to the Aztecs, 3-1, on Thursday, Mar. 1.
The loss dropped Pacific to 4-10 on the season, while San Diego State moved to 9-7 overall.
Through the first four innings both teams were frustrated by good pitching as Pacific starter, senior Curtis Pasma (Madera, Calif.) held San Diego State to just one hit. Meanwhile, San Diego State starter, Steven Hirschfeld took a no-hitter into the fifth inning.
With one out in the top of the fifth inning, the Aztecs' Chris Anderson reached base on a walk. The following batter, Brian Lucas, smacked a double down the third base line to give San Diego State a 1-0 lead. Cameron Johnson followed with a single up the middle to plate Lucas, pushing the Aztec lead to 2-0.
The Tigers remained hitless until the bottom of the sixth inning, when sophomore Kurt Wideman (Fallbrook, Calif.) lined a double into left field. Wideman moved to third on a ground out by junior John Joines (Milpitas, Calif.). Wideman scampered home on a wild pitch, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
Unfortunately for Pacific, their offense could not push across any additional runs, while San Diego State added an insurance run in the top of the seventh as the Aztecs took the contest, 3-1.
Hirschfeld (2-0) picked up the win as he allowed one run on one hit and one walk in six innings.
Pasma (0-1) suffered the loss by giving up two runs on four hits and one walk in six innings.
Pacific and San Diego State will be back in action on Friday, Mar. 2 as the two teams play the first game for each team in the Pacific State Bank Tiger Classic at 2 p.m. on Klein Family Field. The remaining two teams in the round robin tournament, Baylor and San Francisco, will kick-off the three day tournament at 10 a.m.
