Rohnert Park, Calif. - After breaking through with their first victory in over a year, the Pacific women's water polo team is on a roll as the Tigers collected their third win in eight days, a 14-11 win over UC Santa Cruz on Sunday, Feb. 25 at the final day of action at the Sonoma State Tournament.
In addition to their victory over UC Santa Cruz, the Tigers dropped their first game of the day, 17-12, to CS Monterey Bay.
Following Sunday's action, the Tigers are 3-7 on the season.
In the Tigers' first action of the day, Pacific fell behind 8-4 after two periods against CS Monterey Bay. Despite an eight goal second half, the Tigers fell to CS Monterey Bay.
Pacific bounced back in the second game of the day as the Tigers defeated UC Santa Cruz for their third win in eight days. After battling to a 3-3 tie in the first period against the Banana Slugs, Pacific took control of the of the game in the second and third periods. The Tigers took a slight lead of 8-7 into halftime, then dominated UC Santa Cruz defensively in the third period. The Tigers limited the Banana Slugs to only one goal in the third period, taking a 11-8 lead into the final frame. Pacific defended their lead in the fourth quarter to earn their third win in six games.
Freshman Sarah Harris (Cape Town, South Africa) continued to lead the Pacific offense with a combined 10 goals on the day, including six goals in the Tigers victory over UC Santa Cruz. In addition to Harris' efforts offensively, the Tigers got five goals from junior Virginia McConnell (Ottawa, Ontario) and four goals each from junior Kellie Fletcher (Roseville, Calif.) and freshman Alex Kutac (Houston, Texas).
The Tigers return to the pool on Saturday, March 3 as Pacific hosts UC Santa Barbara on at 3 p.m. in Chris Kjeldsen Pool.
