Honolulu, Hawaii - The Pacific baseball team suffered an 8-3 loss to Hawai'i on Sunday, Feb. 11. The loss was the third in a row as the Rainbow swept the Tigers in the series.
Following the loss, Pacific dropped to 2-5 on the season, while Hawai'i moved to 7-2 overall.
The Rainbows started the scoring in the bottom of the second as Hawai'i took advantage a Pacific error to take a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the third inning, Hawai'i extended its lead to 4-0 with three runs on four hits, including two doubles.
Pacific got on the board in top of the fifth inning as sophomore Joey Centanni (San Diego, Calif.) reached first on an error to lead off the inning. One out later, junior Denis Hill (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) was hit by a pitch, putting runners at first and second. The next batter, junior Adam Ching (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) laced a double into left-center field to plate Centanni, making it a 4-1 contest.
Hawai'i responded with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, including a solo home run by Kris Sanchez to lead off the inning.
Trailing 6-1, the Tiger offense began to show signs of life as Pacific scored two runs on four hits. Junior Justin Baum (La Mesa, Calif.) led off with a hard single into center field. One out later, sophomore Zach Chamberlin (San Rafael, Calif.) lined a double into left-center. Off with contact, Baum was thrown out trying to score from first.
With two outs in the inning, Centanni singled up the middle to put runners on the corners. Pinch hitter, sophomore Kurt Wideman (Fallbrook, Calif.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Hill followed with a two-run single up the middle, cutting the Pacific deficit to 6-3.
Hawai'i, however, answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth, pushing the lead back to five runs at 8-3.
Rainbow reliever Jayson Kramer (1-0) picked up the win as he allowed two runs on four hits in 2.2 innings of relief.
Pacific freshman Hunter Carnevale (Roseville, Calif.) took the loss (1-1) as he allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits and one walk.
Denis Hill led the offense as he was 1-for-3 with two RBI.
The Tigers return to the diamond next weekend as Pacific hosts Nevada in a three-game series at Klein Family Field. The series will open on Friday, Feb. 16 at 2 p.m.
