Honolulu, Hawaii - Despite a furious rally in the eighth inning, the Pacific Baseball team dropped its second consecutive game to Hawai'i, 4-3, on Saturday, Feb. 10.
With the loss the Tigers fell to 2-4 on the season, while Hawai'i moved to 6-2 on the season.
The Tigers fell behind 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning as Kris Sanchez hit his second home run of the series, a two-run shot, over the right field wall. Hawai'i added two runs on one hit, two walks, a hit batter and an error in the bottom of the sixth.
Trailing 4-0 entering the eighth inning, the Pacific offense came alive as sophomore Joe Oliveira (San Diego, Calif.), junior Justin Baum (La Mesa, Calif.) and junior Jason Haar (San Diego, Calif.) loaded the bases on consecutive singles. Freshman Mike Walker (Marysville, Calif.) got the Tigers on the board with a sacrifice fly to center field, then sophomore Zach Chamberlin (San Rafael, Calif.) ripped a single into right field to plate Baum, making it a 4-2 contest with runners at first and second. Junior Brett Manning (Boulder, Colo.) followed with a double down the right field line to bring home Haar and send Chamberlin to third. The Tigers, however, were unable to push across the tying run as back-to-back batters struck out to end the eighth inning.
Pacific was retired in order in the ninth as the Tigers couldn't complete their late rally.
Hawai'i starter Mark Rodriguez (3-0) nabbed the victory as he did not allow a run in 5.1 innings. Tyler Davis picked up his first save of the season, holding the Tigers to just two hits over two innings.
Pacific sophomore Joey Centanni (San Diego, Calif.) suffered the loss (0-1) as he allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits and six walks.
Chamberlin and Manning led the Pacific offensive attack as both Tigers were 2-for-2 with an RBI.
Pacific will try to salvage the final game of the series on Sunday, Feb. 11 as freshman Hunter Carnevale (Roseville, Calif.) will start for the Tigers at 1 p.m.
