Pacific Bounces Back in NorPac Tournament Consolation Bracket With 5-2 Win Over Appalachian State

Stanford, Calif. - On the strength of five first half goals, No. 3 Pacific defeated No. 7 Appalachian State, 5-2, in the NorPac Tournament's consolation bracket from the Varsity Turf at Stanford University.

The win moved Pacific to 6-11 on the season, while Appalachian State finished the 2007 season at 3-18.

Sophomores Katy McDonough (Ventura, Calif.) and Kim Keyawa (Chico, Calif.) each scored a pair of goals to pace the Tigers.

On its first two shots, Pacific scored a pair of goals in the first 3:13 of the match to take a quick 2-0 lead. Keyawa put the Tigers on the board 53 seconds in, ripping a shot from the left into the back of the cage off a slip from senior Elle Busch (San Jose, Calif.). At 3:13, McDonough one-timed a baseline pass from junior Kedibone Leubane (Capetown, South Africa) for a 2-0 advantage.

In the 11th minute, Busch poked home the ball after Leubane touched her own rebound over to Busch. Keyawa struck again in the 24th minute as she took a long pass from senior Katie Fixsen (Vista, Calif.) and beat ASU keeper Denise Adams 1 vs. 1 with a low shot far post.

Appalachian got on the board in the 29th minute on a goal by Jessie Harris. Alicia Larkin's shot was tipped by Jeanette Miers to Harris in close to make it, 4-1. A few minutes before the half, Pacific made it 5-1 as McDonough scored her second goal of the match.

Larkins cut the lead to 5-2 in the 62nd minute, poking home a rebound after a defensive save by Pacific's Lisa Muhl.

The Tigers out shot the Mountaineers, 19-11, while ASU held a 6-4 advantage in corners. Keyawa recorded a game high five shots for the Tigers. Larkins led the Mountaineers with four shots. Senior Valerie Niles (San Jose, Calif.) made five saves for UOP and Adams stopped eight shots for ASU.

Pacific will face off against fifth-seeded Longwood in the fifth-place match tomorrow, Nov. 3, at 9:30 am.
