Farmville, Vir. - The Pacific field hockey team notched its second win of the year with a 6-1 victory over Davidson on Friday, October 5. With the win the Tigers moved to 2-9 overall and 1-2 in conference play while Davidson moved to 7-5 on the season and 3-3 in the NorPac.
Pacific outshot Davidson, 14-7, during the Friday evening match as the Tigers' victory snapped their seven game losing streak.
The first goal of the game came at the 8:36 minute mark when junior Kedibone Leubane (Capetown, South Africa) netted her first goal of the game on an assist from junior Erica Nestle (San Jose, Calif.). In the 24th minute she scored again as she redirected a loose ball towards the goalkeeper.
Moments later her teammate, sophomore Kim Keyawa (Chico, Calif.) notched her fourth goal of the season as she tipped in a pass from freshman Kelly Perkins (Gilroy, Calif) at the 28:42 minute mark to push the Tigers to a 3-0 halftime lead.
Shortly after the break, Leubane approached the goalie again in the 36th minute of the game to attempt another shot. After the ball bounced off the goalkeeper, she sent the ball sliding past Davidson goalie for the third time. Leubane leads the Tigers with five goals on the season.
Davidson reacted with a goal at the 50:48 minute mark as Maxwell Kayli fired a shot just inside the circle for their single tally mark of the game.
Junior Ashley Niccum responded with a goal minutes later as she tipped the ball in low on an assist from sophomore Katy McDonough (Ventura, Calif.).
Abruptly afterwards, McDonough recorded a goal of her own as she crossed in from the backline to make another advance on the scoreboard on an assist from Keyawa at the 69:05 mark.
Sophomore Brianna Cummins (Fallbrook, Calif.) and Nestle added significantly to the win as the two each had a defensive save to assist the Tigers in preventing Davidson from scoring again.
Senior goalkeeper Valerie Niles (San Jose, Calif) had three saves in the victory.
The Tigers return to action this Sunday, Oct. 7. as they battle for another conference win over Longwood (3-9, 1-2) who is coming off a 3-1 victory over Georgetown (2-8).
