Berkeley, Calif. - The Pacific women's water polo team dropped their season opener to No. 4 Cal by the score of 24-6. With the loss, the Tigers fall to 0-1 overall, 0-1 in MPSF play, while the Golden Bears improve to 1-0 overall, 1-0 in MPSF action.
Cal got off to a fast start, scoring the games first six goals before freshman Sarah Harris (Cape Town, South Africa) scored the first Pacific goal of the season in the first period to make the score 6-1. The Golden Bears scored the games next 11 goals before Harris was again able to find the back of the cage midway through the third period to make the score 17-2. Harris then added her third goal of the game two minutes later to make the score 18-3 before Cal scored two more to close out the period at 20-3.
The Tigers took advantage of a 6-on-5 opportunity to start the fourth as redshirt junior Virginia McConnell (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) scored to make the score 20-4. Moments later Harris connected on her fourth goal of the evening to make the score 20-5. With the score 24-5 late in the contest, junior Kellie Fletcher (Roseville, Calif.) scored her first goal of the season to account for the final of 24-6.
The Tigers are next in action on Saturday, February 3rd as they take on UC Davis. The opening sprint is scheduled for noon at Chris Kjeldsen Pool.
