No. 12 Pacific Sweeps Past UC Santa Cruz

STOCKTON, Calif. - The No. 12 Pacific men's volleyball team improved to 3-5 on the season with a 30-24, 30-20, 30-23 sweep of UC Santa Cruz (5-1) on Friday, Jan. 26, at the Alex G. Spanos Center.

The Tigers got off to a sluggish start in game one, trailing 4-0 to start the game, and continuing to trail until a UC Santa Cruz service error gave the Tigers the lead at 22-21. Pacific then won 8 of the last 11 points of the game to win 30-24.

Game two started off much kinder to the Tigers, taking their first lead at 8-7 on a block by junior Simon Chen-Byerley (Northfield, Ill.) and senior Matt Cornell (Granada Hills, Calif.). The Tigers largest lead of the match was achieved on the last point, a kill by senior Andreas Baboulidis (Russelsheim, Germany) to make the final score of the 30-20. In game three, The Tigers led from start to finish, posting a 30-23 final tally in the game.

For the match, Baboulidis, who played game on at libero, recorded 13 kills on 20 attacks with just one error for a hitting percentage of .600. Chen-Byerley added six total blocks including a solo effort, and junior Pekka Seppanen (Kuopio, Finland) added seven kills and three service aces.

UC Santa Cruz was led by Tyler Hinz, who recorded nine kills but had 10 errors for the match, while Brian Shires added eight.

The Tigers are next in action as they travel to Stanford for an MPSF match on Tuesday, January 30th. First serve is scheduled for 7pm.
