Muncie, Ind. - The Pacific field hockey team defeated Ball State 5-3 on Thursday, Sept. 7 in Muncie, Ind.
Pacific wasted no time grabbing the lead as senior Vianney Campos (Guadalajara, Mexico) netted the team's first goal from the top of the circle just 4:25 into the game. Six minutes later Jennifer Chaney (Campbell, Calif.) set up Katy McDonough (Ventura, Calif.) to put Pacific up by two and from there the Tigers would never look back.
Later in the half, Pacific added to their lead when Marissa Atilano (Escondido, Calif.) earned her first goal of the 2006 season by deflecting the ball into the back corner of the net. Ball State's Brooke Macgillivary scored with less than four minutes left in the half to keep the Cardinals within two, but in the end it would not be enough.
Jennifer Chaney came out strong for the Tigers in the second half by scoring less than a minute into the period. Shortly after that, McDonough netted her second goal of the game and her third of the season by deflecting a shot from Vianney Campos into the goal to put the Tigers up by four.
Ball State's Carla Chiampi and Tara Reed each scored a goal for the Cardinals later in the period making the final score 5-3 in favor of the Tigers. With the win Pacific moved to 4-2 on the season, while Ball State dropped to 0-4.
The Tigers will continue their road trip with a game against Saint Louis on Friday, Sept. 8 in Muncie, Ind.
