Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific field hockey team opened their 2006 NorPac schedule with a loss to Stanford on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2-1. With the loss the Tigers moved 5-5 overall and 0-1 in the NorPac Conference, while Stanford moved to 4-6 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
Stanford's Rachel Mozenter netted the first goal of the game less than five minutes into the contest. The Cardinal goal was scored shortly after a penalty corner as Mozenter took advantage of a blocked shot taken by Bailey Richardson.
Ten minutes later junior Melody Demel (Fallbrook, Calif.) was able to tie the game at 1-1 by scoring her second goal of the season on an assist from senior Vianney Campos (Guadalajara, Mexico). Although the score was tied at half, the Tigers outshot Stanford in the first period, 8-4.
In the second half, Stanford regained the lead when Mozenter took off on a breakaway down the right side of the field. After her first shot was saved by junior goalkeeper Valerie Niles (San Jose, Calif.), Mozenter snagged up her own rebound and scored her second goal of the game just ten minutes into the period.
The Tigers had a couple of chances to tie the game late with two penalty corners in the last two minutes, but unfortunately they were unable to capitalize as Stanford was able to hold on, 2-1.
Pacific will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 30 when they take on Stanford in a non-conference game in Stanford, Calif. The game will start at 1:00 PM.
