Berkeley, Calif. - Behind two goals from senior Vianney Campos (Guadalajara, Mexico) and two goals from sophomore Erica Nestle (San Jose, Calif.), the Pacific field hockey team defeated Massachusetts, 5-2 on Tuesday, Aug. 29.
The Tigers were the first on the board in the contest when freshman Katy McDonough (Ventura, Calif.) assisted senior Jennifer Chaney (Campbell, Calif.) for the first goal of the game. The assist was the first of Katy's collegiate career and the goal was the first for Chaney on the season.
Shortly after that, Pacific was able to add a goal to their lead when Campos scored her first goal of the day on a breakaway down the left side of the field. Although Erin Parker of UMass was able to pull her team within one before the end of half, the Tigers would eventually prevail.
Early in the second half Campos scored her second goal of the game and her sixth of the season to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead. Then, less than a minute and a half later, Nestle was able to score her first goal of the season on an assist from Campos to extend the Tigers lead to three.
Nestle would eventually add her second goal of the game with 1:38 left to play, after Lauren Gillespie was able to score for UMass making the final 5-2. With win the Tigers moved to 2-1 on they year, while UMass fell to 0-3.
Pacific will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 2 as the Tigers take on New Hampshire at 1 p.m. in Berkeley, Calif.
