Berkeley, Calif. - Behind four goals from senior Vianney Campos (Guadalajara, Mexico), the Pacific field hockey team defeated No. 6 American, 4-3 in overtime on Sunday, Aug. 27.
With the win the Tigers moved to 1-1 on the season and marked the first time in Pacific history that the Tigers defeated an opponent ranked in the top 10. American dropped to 0-2 on the season with the loss.
American University's Irene Shickhardt was the first to score in the game when she took advantage of a loose ball after a penalty corner, early in the first half. Shortly after that, her teammate, Savannah Graybill scored on an assist from Tiffany Carter to put the Eagles up 2-0.
Right before the end of the first half, the Tigers were able to tie the game up when Campos scored two goals within a minute and a half of each other to even the score at 2-2. Her first goal came shortly after a penalty corner, on an assist from freshman Lisa Muhl (Harleysville, Penn.), and her second goal was scored on an unassisted shot lofted from the left side of the field. The assist was the first of Muhl's collegiate career.
In the second period, Pacific controlled the ball for most of the half and they finally took their first lead of the game when Campos scored her third goal of the contest with 0:29 left to play in regulation. However, 26 seconds later, American's Savannah Graybill netted her second goal of the game with only 13 seconds left to play, sending the game into overtime.
In the overtime period both teams battled exhaustion, but in the end the Tigers would prevail on yet another goal from Campos. Her goal came with 3:08 left to play in the period, giving the Tigers a 4-3 victory over the No. 6 team in the country and their first win of the season.
The Tigers will be back in action on Tuesday, Aug. 29 as Pacific takes on Massachusetts at 3 p.m. in Berkeley, Calif.
