Stanford, Calif. - The Pacific field hockey team opened their 2006 season on Saturday, August 26 with a loss to No. 1 Maryland, 6-0. The loss dropped the Tigers to 0-1 on the season, while Maryland moved to 1-0.
Maryland's Laula Ingante was the first to score in the game when she netted a shot off of a penalty corner with nine minutes left to play in the first half. Although that was the only goal scored in the half, she would later add another in the second by taking advantage of a loose ball in front of Pacific's goal.
Janneke Van Leeuwen scored two goals for Maryland as well. Her first goal came on a deflected penalty corner, while her second was scored with a backhand to put the Terrapins up 5-0. Also scoring a goal a piece for Maryland were Emily Trycinski and Kim Ziegler.
For Pacific, junior Katie Fixsen (Vista, Calif.) had two key defensive saves in the game and senior Vianney Campos (Guadalajara, Mexico) took six of the team's seven shots on goal. While the Tigers played the number one team in the country tough in the first half, they gave up five goals in the second for their first loss of the season.
The Tigers will be back in action, tomorrow, August 28 as they take on No. 6 American University at 3:00. The game will be played in Berkeley, Calif.
