Tigers Pick Up Game Three Win Over UC Irvine Behind Spurgeon Complete Game

Irvine, Calif. The Pacific Tigers picked up a 4-1 victory over UC Irvine in the finale of a three game set on Sunday, May 14th from Anteater Ballpark. With the win, the Tigers improve their record to 26-22, 6-12 in Big West Conference play, while UC Irvine falls to 32-17, 7-8 in Big West action.

Senior Steve Spurgeon (Stockton, Calif.) threw a complete game for the Tigers, recording a career high eight strikeouts in his first start as a Tiger. Spurgeon's previous career high was a six strikeout performance came against the Tigers on April 8th, 2003 as a member of the USF Dons. Spurgeon spread out five hits and allowed one earned run, while walking two in his first career complete game.

The Tigers opened the scoring in the second as senior Anthony Jackson (Modesto, Calif.) crushed a 3-1 pitch from Anteater pitcher Scott Gorgen off the right field wall, and he came all the way around to score on the inside-the-park home run. With a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth, senior Ramon Glasgow (Stockton, Calif.) reached on a one-out infield single, stole second, and then scored on a two-strike single by senior Will Brindza (Sherwood, Ore.) to make the score 2-0.

UC Irvine got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI double by Cody Cipriano that scored Ben Orloff, who reached on a two-out single, cutting the Pacific lead in half to 2-1.

In the top of the eighth inning, senior Matt Berezay (Manteca, Calif.) led off with a solo home run off of the scoreboard in left-center field, giving him a team leading 10 on the season. Not to be outdone, sophomore Justin Baum (La Mesa, Calif.), who was tied with Berezay for the team lead entering the game, connected on a solo shot of his own later that same inning to give the Tigers a 4-1 lead.

Spurgeon recorded his third win of the season for Pacific, while Scott Gorgen picked up the loss for UC Irvine and ran his record to 6-3 on the season.

The Tigers are next in action on May 19th as they host Washington in game one of a three game set from Klein Family Field.
