Davis, Calif. - Down 5-1 in the top of the ninth inning, the Pacific Tigers scored four runs in the ninth, one run in the tenth and the game-winning run in the eleventh to defeat UC Davis, 7-6, on Sunday, Apr. 9.
The win lifted the Tigers to 19-11 on the season, while UC Davis dropped to 12-16 overall.
Trailing 5-1 in the ninth, senior Matt Berezay (Manteca, Calif.) led off the inning with a single to left field. Senior Ramon Glasgow (Stockton, Calif.) followed with a single through the left side. Sophomore Justin Baum (La Mesa, Calif.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases and chase UC Davis starter, Bryan Evans, as the Aggies brought Tyler LaTorre in to pitch from right field.
Sophomore Brett Manning (Boulder, Colo.) greeted LaTorre with a two-run single to center field, cutting the UC Davis lead to 5-3. One out later, Pacific pinch hitter senior Bob Saunders (Oakland, Calif.) bounced a ground ball that was mishandled by Aggie third baseman Daniel Descalso, allowing the Tigers to load the bases for the second time in the inning.
A walk to Tiger freshman Joe Oliveira (San Diego, Calif.) forced in Baum, making it a one-run game at 5-4. The next batter, sophomore Adam Ching (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) tied the game, 5-5, with a sacrifice fly to center field that brought in Manning. The Tigers, however, could not push across the go ahead run in the ninth.
After holding UC Davis scoreless in the bottom of the ninth, Pacific took its first lead of the game in the top of the tenth on a two-out double from freshman Alex Zanini (Stockton, Calif.) and an RBI single from senior John Devany (Danvile, Calif.).
The Aggies, however, responded with an unearned run as the leadoff batter in the tenth, Brandon Oliver, reached on an error and scored on a two-out sinlge from LaTorre.
Pacific took the lead for good in the top of the eleventh as senior Anthony Jackson (Modesto, Calif.) laced a two-out single to left field. Jackson stole second base, then scampered home on an RBI single through the right side by Berezay.
The Tigers fell behind in the bottom of the second inning as UC Davis scored a run on two singles, a stolen base and a wild pitch. Aggie right fielder, Tyler LaTorre led the inning off with an infield single. LaTorre stole second, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Two outs later, LaTorre came in to score the first run of the game on a single to left field.
UC Davis added to their lead with two more runs in the bottom of the third as shortstop Brandon Oliver scored from third on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. Later in the inning, Daniel Descalso doubled down the left field line to drive in Michael Jacobellis, giving UC Davis a 3-0 lead.
The Aggies added a run in fourth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of second baseman Jacobellis that brought in David Treat, who reached on a single.
Pacific got on the board in the top of the sixth inning as Jackson fisted a one-out single into center field. Berezay followed with a run-scoring double to plate Jackson, cutting the Aggies lead to 4-1.
UC Davis added an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth to set up the Tigers' rally.
Pacific senior Steve Spurgeon (Stockton, Calif.) picked up his first win as a Tiger, with 2.1 innings of relief. Spurgeon (1-0) allowed one unearned run on two hits and four walks.
Sophomore Jason Haar (San Diego, Calif.) picked up his second save of the year with a scoreless eleventh inning.
LaTorre suffered the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits in three innings.
Berezay led the Tigers at the plate as he finished the day, 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored.
The Tigers will be back in action on tomorrow, Monday, Apr. 10 as Pacific faces Stanford at 6 p.m. in Palo Alto, Calif. The contest is a makeup game from the battle schedule between the two teams for Tuesday, Apr. 5.
