Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific women's water polo team fell to No. 12 Long Beach State by the score of 10-2 in MPSF action, contested on Saturday, April 8 at Chris Kjeldsen Pool. With the loss, the Tigers fall to 0-17, 0-9 in MPSF play, while the 49ers improve to 12-9, 4-5 in MPSF play.
Pacific held the 49ers in check for most of the first period before surrending two goals in the final minute to give Long Beach St. a 2-0 lead. LBSU continued the momentum into the second period, scoring the first four goals to give them a 6-0 lead.
Sophomore Kellie Fletcher (Roseville, Calif.) then scored on a very difficult chance, a lob shot deep in the shot clock from a tough angle to pull the game within 6-1. The 49ers fired right back one minute later with a goal by Ashley Heaslip to give them a 7-1 halftime lead.
Controversy started half number two, where the Tigers had 15 seconds left on a LBSU ejection from the first half, but the 49ers lined up with six players for the sprint. Pacific was awarded the sprint and a 6-on-5 opportunity, but came up empty, as the 49ers scored on the counter to make the lead a margin of seven at 8-1.
Later in the third, after another Long Beach St. goal, Senior Julia Snyder (Fresno, Calif.) put one in the back of the cage for Pacific to make the score 9-2 heading into the fourth.
The final period went scoreless through the first six minutes as both teams missed several goal-scoring opportunities before the 49ers notched the only goal of the quarter, as Dayna Wawrzynski scored with :57 seconds left to give the final margin of 10-2.
Pacific struggled in penetrating the Long Beach St. defense, as the 49ers recorded 15 steals in the contest.
Snyder had a solid all-around game for the Tigers, recording six steals, five kick-outs drawn and winning three sprints. Freshman goalie Sara Mirels (Haleiwa, Hawaii) had a solid day in the cage, recording seven goalie blocks.
Long Beach St. was led by Christina Wensman and Marina Canetti, who each recorded two goals, while Angie Angstadt provided three steals and an assist.
Pacific is next in action on Sunday, April 9th at Chris Kjeldsen Pool as they host conference foe UC Irvine. Opening sprint is scheduled for noon.
