April 29, 2006

Box Score

Long Beach, Calif. Despite a late rally to tie the game at 5-5, the Pacific Baseball team dropped a 7-5 decision to Long Beach State on Saturday, Apr. 29.

The loss dropped Pacific to 22-18 on the season and 3-8 in Big West Conference play, while Long Beach State moved to 22-18 overall and 6-1 in conference.

Trailing 2-0 in the top of the second, the Tigers got on the board with three consecutive two-out hits. Sophomore Brett Manning (Boulder, Colo.) started the Pacific rally with a single through the right side. Senior Ramon Glasgow (Stockton, Calif.) singled into right-center field to put runners at the corners. Senior Bob Saunders (Oakland, Calif.) delivered a run-scoring single to left to plate Manning and pull the Tigers within a run at 2-1.

Long Beach State, however, added two runs in the bottom of the second and another in the fourth to chase Pacific starter junior Curtis Pasma (Madera, Calif.) and give the 49ers a 5-1 lead.

The score remained 5-1 until the top of the sixth, when Pacific tallied two runs on two hits. Senior Matt Berezay (Manteca, Calif.) led off the inning with a single to right. Sophomore Justin Baum (La Mesa, Calif.) drew a walk to put runners at first and second. Senior John Devany (Danville, Calif.) dropped down a sacrifice bunt along the third base line to move Berezay and Baum to second and third. Manning followed with a sacrifice fly to right field that brought in Berezay and sent Baum to third. Glasgow then lined an RBI single into left field to bring the Tigers with two at 5-3.

The Tigers struck again in the top of the seventh as sophomore Adam Ching (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) and senior Anthony Jackson (Modesto, Calif.) reached on back-to-back singles. Berezay drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. That sent the 49ers to the bullpen for right-hander Brett Andrade. Baum greeted Andrade with a sharp single to left field, making it a 5-4 game. One out later, Manning tied the game at 5-5 with his second consecutive sacrifice fly.

After holding Long Beach State scoreless in the seventh, the Tigers once again loaded the bases in the top of the eighth inning. With two outs, Ching and Jackson singled, then Berezay walked. That brought Baum back to the plate. After falling behind in the count 0-2, Baum battled back to a full count of 3-2. On the ninth pitch of the at-bat, Baum launched a long fly ball to deep left field, but in the spacious Blair Field, Long Beach State's Jose Hernandez nabbed it on the warning track to end the Tigers' threat.

The 49ers then scored two runs on three hits to take the game, 7-5.

Pacific junior Jake Wild (Kingsburg, Calif.) was the tough luck loser as he surrendered just one run in 4.1 innings of stellar relief. Long Beach State's Vance Worley (2-6) picked up the win with two innings of scoreless relief.

Glasgow led the Tigers' offense with two hits in the game.

Pacific and Long Beach State will wrapup their three-game series on Sunday, Apr. 30 at 1 p.m. at Blair Field.
