Long Beach, Calif. Five early runs by the Long Beach State 49ers proved too much for Pacific as the Tigers fell, 5-2, on Friday, Apr. 28.
The loss dropped Pacific to 22-17 on the season and 3-7 in Big West Conference play, while Long Beach State moved to 21-18 overall and 5-1 in conference.
The Tigers broke out front in the top of the first inning as senior Anthony Jackson (Modesto, Calif.) reached base on a one-out double that bounced off the glove of Long Beach State right fielder, Sean Boatright. The next two Pacific batters, seniors Matt Berezay (Manteca, Calif.) and John Devany (Danville, Calif.) drew walks to load the bases. Senior Ramon Glasgow (Stockton, Calif.) drove home the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Long Beach State, however, scored two runs on four hits in the bottom of the second to take the lead, 2-1. The 49ers added three more runs in the bottom of the third as Long Beach State got three hits to begin the inning.
The score remained 5-1 until the bottom of the sixth inning as sophomore Justin Baum (La Mesa, Calif.) lined a one-out single into center field. Senior Bob Saunders (Oakland, Calif.) reached on an infield single, sending Baum to second. Baum took third as the throw to first got away. With runners at the corners, sophomore Brett Manning (Boulder, Colo.) launched an RBI double to the gap in left-center. Baum scored to make it 5-2, while Saunders went to third. Trailing 5-2 in the top of the ninth inning, the Tigers brought the tying run to the plate as with one out, sophomore Adam Ching (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) and Jackson were hit by pitches. That brought Berezay to the plate and sent Long Beach State to the bullpen as the 49ers called in freshman Brian Shaw.
Shaw, however, induced a game-ending double play to thwart the Tigers' comeback hopes.
Pacific and Long Beach State will continue their three-game series on Saturday, Apr. 29 at 2 p.m. at Blair Field.
