Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific women's water polo team fell to No. 6 Cal by the score of 15-3 in a MPSF contest held at Chris Kjeldsen Pool on Saturday, April 22. With the loss, the Tigers fall to 0-21, 0-12 in MPSF play, while Cal improves to 15-8, 9-3 in MPSF conference play.
California stormed out of the gate to start the game, scoring the games first nine goals. Katya Eadington's second goal of the game, with 4:25 remaining in the second period gave the Golden Bears a 9-0 lead. Pacific senior Julia Snyder (Fresno, Calif.) then scored her first of two goals on the day to make the score 9-1. Cal added a late goal by Vanessa Lindsey to take a 10-1 halftime advantage.
The two teams struggled offensively to start the third period, as at one point each team traded a pair of 35 second shot-clock violations. After a Cal goal :28 seconds into the period, both teams went scoreless for over seven minutes before Pacific sophomore Jocelyn Gray (Strathmore, Alberta) scored with :31 seconds remaining in the period to make the score 11-2.
The final period saw Cal once again go on the offensive, scoring three unanswered before Snyder scored her second of the day for the Tigers, making the score 14-3. The Golden Bears added a late goal by Rebecca Dreyfuss to give the final tally of 15-3.
Snyder's two goals led the way for the Tigers, while she also added an assist. Junior Tina Tkalcevic (Mountain View, Calif.) also added an assist and a steal for the Tigers.
Eadington recorded a hat-trick to lead the Golden Bears, while Lindsey, Lauren McGee and Molly Hayes each added two goals. Starting goalkeeper Heather Stuart recorded four blocks, two assists and a steal in her one half of work.
Pacific honored seniors Leila Andrews, Kara Buchanan, Vicki McMurchie, Julia Snyder and Tory Ungari before the match, as each played their final home game at Chris Kjeldsen Pool.
These two teams will play again in first round action of the MPSF Women's Water Polo Championships at Anteater Aquatics Complex in Irvine, Calif. on Thursday, April 27th. Opening Sprint is scheduled for 10am between the fourth seeded Golden Bears and the 13th seeded Tigers.
