Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific baseball team dropped a 16-4 contest to UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, Apr. 15.
The loss dropped Pacific to 21-13 on the season and 3-3 in the Big West Conference, while UC Santa Barbara moved to 15-17 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
Pacific found themselves behind from the first inning as two Tiger errors in led to three unearned runs for UCSB.
Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Tigers got on the board as senior John Devany (Danville, Calif.), sophomore Brett Manning (Boulder, Colo.) and freshman Alex Zanini (Stockton, Calif.) put together three consecutive singles to make it a 4-1 contest.
The Gauchos, however, scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning to extend their lead to 9-4.
The Tigers responded with a bang off the bat of senior Matt Berezay (Manteca, Calif.) in the bottom of the fifth inning. Senior Bob Saunders (Oakland, Calif.) was hit by a pitch to lead off the fifth inning. Sophomore Adam Ching (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) followed with a single ip the middle. One out later, Berezay launched his eighth home run of the season over the left-center field wall. Berezay's three-run home run, cut the Gauchos' lead to 9-4.
UCSB responded with six more runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 15-4 lead.
Matt Wade (2-0) picked up the win for UCSB as he did not allow a run in three innings of relief.
Pacific junior Jake Wild (Kingsburg, Calif.) suffered the loss for Pacific as he allowed four runs (one earned) on four hits in 2.2 innings. Wild dropped to 2-3 with the loss.
The Tigers will be back in action on Tuesday, Apr. 18 as Pacific opens its new on-campus ballpark, Klein Family Field, at 2 p.m. against the Nevada Wolf Pack.
