Box Score
Stanford, Calif. - Both Stanford and Pacific got dominating pitching, but two unearned runs allowed the Stanford Cardinal to defeat the Pacific baseball team, 2-1, on Monday, Apr. 10.
The loss dropped the Tigers to 19-12 on the season, while Stanford moved to 15-11.
On a night that saw three defensive miscues that resulted in all three runs scored in the game, the game started off with a stellar defensive play by the Tigers' right fielder, senior Ramon Glasgow (Stockton, Calif.). In the bottom of the first inning, with the Cardinal threatening to jump out front of the Tigers with three consecutive singles, Glasgow produced a perfect throw from right field to gun down the Cardinal lead runner at the plate, preserving the early 0-0 tie and setting the Tigers up to strike in the top of the second inning.
With the perfect set up for the top of the second, the Tigers took advantage of their opportunities, using the only Stanford error of the game to push across the first run of the game. After keeping the Tigers in line for the lead in the last half inning, Glasgow led off the second with a double to right field. Two outs later, Glasgow came around to score from second on a ball hit to Stanford's shortstop was misplayed, giving the Tigers the early, 1-0 lead. For the game, Glasgow led all Tiger hitters as he went 2-for-4 while hitting in the four hole for Pacific.
Pitching with the lead, starting pitcher, junior Jake Wild (Kingsburg, Calif.) pitched four more innings, giving up just one more hit, finishing his outing with four strike outs, two walks, and four hits allowed in five innings of work.
Despite the strong pitching by their starter, the Tigers were unable to hold the lead for their pitching staff, relinquishing two runs, one in the seventh and one in the ninth, both resulting from defensive missteps. For the Cardinal, Chris Minaker drove in the lone RBI for Stanford, singling the game-winner in the bottom of the ninth, making up for his error in the second inning that resulted in the lone run of the game for Pacific.
On the mound, senior Eric Stolp (Oakhurst, Calif.) picked up the hard luck loss for the Tigers, falling to 3-2 on the season. Stolp gave up one run on one hit as he did not record an out in the ninth inning. For the Cardinal, Jeremy Bleich picked up the win as he struck out two of three in the ninth inning for Stanford.
The Tigers will be back in action on Thursday, Apr. 13 as Pacific returns to Big West Conference play with a three-game series against UC Santa Barbara. The first game of the series begins at 6 p.m. in Stockton Ballpark.
