Tigers drop series finale, 8-3, to Santa Clara

Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific Tigers baseball team dropped the series finale with the Santa Clara Broncos, 8-3, on Sunday, Feb. 5.

The loss dropped the Tigers to 2-1 on the season, while Santa Clara moved to 1-2.

Santa Clara scored three runs on two hits in the first two innings to get out in front, 3-0. The Broncos stretched the lead to 4-0 with a single run in the fourth.

Pacific got on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning as sophomore Brett Manning (Boulder, Colo.) doubled home senior Jake Ross (Friday Harbor, Wash.).

The Broncos extended the lead back to four runs with a single run in the top of the seventh, then Pacific senior Matt Berezay (Manteca, Calif.) hit a solo home run over the left field wall to make it a 5-2 contest.

Santa Clara put the game out of reach in the top of the ninth with three insurance runs.

Pacific starter, sophomore Jason Haar (San Diego, Calif.), suffered the loss (0-1) as he allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits in 4.1 innings. Santa Clara's Matt Wickswat (1-0) collected the victory, holding the Tigers scoreless through five innings.

Despite suffering the loss on Sunday, Pacific took the series from Santa Clara with victories on Friday (4-1) and Saturday (14-6).

Berezay led Pacific offensively as he was 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and a home run.

The Tigers will be back in action on Thursday, Feb. 9 as Pacific hosts BYU at 6 p.m. in Stockton Ballpark.
