Tigers explode for seven first inning runs, blow past Santa Clara 14-6

Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific Tigers baseball team exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the first inning as the Tigers defeated Santa Clara, 14-6, on Saturday, Feb. 4.

With the win the Tigers moved to 2-0, while Santa Clara fell to 0-2.

The Tigers got all the offense they would need in the first inning as nine of the first ten Pacific batters reached base safely. Sophomore Adam Ching (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) got the rally started for the Tigers when he reached first on an error. Senior Matt Berezay (Manteca, Calif.) was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second with nobody out. Sophomore Justin Baum (La Mesa, Calif.) walked to load the bases, then sophomore Jason Haar (San Diego, Calif.) gave Pacific a 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly.

Senior Ramon Glasgow (Stockton, Calif.) drew a one-out to pack the bases once again. Senior Will Brindza (Sherwood, Ore.) made it a 2-0 contest with a ground ball single up the middle. Senior Jake Ross (Friday Harbor, Wash.) came to the plate next and drilled his first career home run, a grand slam over the right-centerfield wall. Staked to a 6-0 lead, sophomore Brett Manning (Boulder, Colo.) capped the inning with a solo home run.

Ross and Manning's home run were back-to-back jacks.

Pacific added six runs on six singles, a walk and a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to take a 13-0 lead.

The Tigers went on for a 14-6 win as junior Jake Wild (Kingsburg, Calif.) collected his first victory for the Tigers. Wild (1-0) allowed one run on four hits and two walks in five innings. Santa Clara's Chris Stansbury (0-1) suffered the loss as he allowed seven runs on four hits and two walks in .2 innings.

Ross led the Tigers offensively as he was 2-for-5 with five RBI.

Pacific and Santa Clara will conclude their three game series on Sunday, Feb.5 at 12 p.m. in Stockton Ballpark.
