Box Score
Santa Clara, Calif. - The Pacific Tigers earned a tense 4-1 victory over Santa Clara on Friday, Feb. 4.
With the win the Tigers moved to 1-0 on the season, while Santa Clara fell to 0-1.
Pacific started the scoring in the top of the second inning as the Tigers took advantage of a couple of Santa Clara miscues. With one out in the inning, senior Ramon Glasgow (Stockton, Calif.) reached first on an error. Glasgow moved to second on a balk, then went to third on a ground out by senior Will Brindza (Sherwood, Ore.). With senior Anthony Jackson (Modesto, Calif.) at the plate, Glasgow bluffed toward the plate, then scampered home on a wild pitch by Santa Clara freshman Sean O'Neil.
The game remained 1-0 into the bottom of the seventh inning, when Santa Clara got a leadoff double from Kevin Drever. Drever scored to tie the game at 1-1 on a single from Dustin Realini. With one out and runners at the corners, Pacific junior Curtis Pasma (Madera, Calif.) came on for senior Luke Massetti (Modesto, Calif.). Pasma shut the door on the Broncos and gave the Tigers momentum heading into the eighth inning.
In the eighth, Pacific once again pressured Santa Clara into mistakes as sophomore Adam Ching (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) legged a one out single off the mound, then senior Matt Berezay (Manteca, Calif.) was hit by a pitch, putting runners at first and second. A wild pitch sent Ching and Berezay to second and third for sophomore Justin Baum (La Mesa, Calif.). Baum squibbed a ball past the mound, plating Ching. An error brought in Berezay and sent Baum all the way to third. Senior Jake Ross (Friday Harbor, Wash.) singled through the left side to drive in Baum and give Pacific a 4-1 lead.
Pasma gave way to senior Steve Spurgeon (Stockton, Calif.) with runners at first and second and one out in the ninth. Spurgeon collected his first save as a Tiger, getting Eric Newton to fly out to deep center field with the bases loaded.
Pasma (1-0) collected his first victory with Pacific as he allowed just one hit in two innings. Despite a masterful performance, Massetti did not factor in the decision, allowing one run on three hits in 6.1 innings.
The loss went to Santa Clara's Justin Kuehn (0-1) as he surrendered two runs on one hit in 1.1 innings.
Jackson and Ching led the Tigers offensively with two hits each.
Pacific and Santa Clara will be back in action, tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 5 at 12 p.m. as the Tigers open their home schedule.
