Feb. 28, 2006

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - A four-run rally in the fifth inning, led the Pacific baseball team to a 4-1 win over Saint Mary's on Tuesday, Feb. 28.

The win lifted the Tigers to 10-4 on the season, while Saint Mary's fell to 6-7 overall.

All the scoring in the game came in the fifth inning as Saint Mary's scored one run in the top of the fifth inning, while the Tigers put four on the board in the bottom half of the frame.

Saint Mary's put the first run on the board on an RBI single from Orben Frederick. Pacific starter, senior Luke Massetti (Modesto, Calif.), limited the damage to just one run in the top of the fifth as he left the bases loaded by striking out Saint Mary's number three hitter, Preston Young.

The Tigers' offense got going in the bottom half of the inning as sophomore Brett Manning (Boulder, Colo.) was hit by a pitch with one out to start the Pacific rally. One out later, junior Clint Eastman (Pleasanton, Calif.) dropped a perfect bunt single down the third base line to put runners at first and second. A walk to senior Dale Hall (Wenatchee, Wash.) loaded the bases.

That brought leadoff man, sophomore Adam Ching (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.), to the plate. Ching promptly lined an infield single off the glove of Gaels' starter Corey Madden to tie the game at 1-1. Senior Anthony Jackson (Modesto, Calif.) followed with an RBI single past third to make it 2-1. The Tigers added two runs on a blown popup to claim a 4-1 lead.

The Pacific bullpen nailed down the victory as sophomore Jason Haar (San Diego, Calif.) and junior Curtis Pasma (Madera, Calif.) combined on four scoreless innings of relief to secure the victory.

Massetti (2-1) earned the win as he allowed one run on six hits and two walks in five innings, while Pasma collected his third save of the season by tossing a scoreless eighth and ninth.

Madden (1-1) suffered the loss as he surrendered four runs (two earned) on five hits and one walk in five innings.

Pacific will return to the diamond on Friday, March 10 as Pacific begins play at the Baylor Tournament against the host Baylor Bears at 4 p.m.
