Reno, Nev. - The Pacific Tigers baseball team dropped a 4-3 decision to Nevada on Saturday, Feb. 25.
The loss dropped the Tigers to 8-4 on the season, while Nevada moved to 4-7 overall.
Pacific jumped out in front in the top of the first inning as with two outs and senior Matt Berezay (Manteca, Calif.) at second base, sophomore Justin Baum (La Mesa, Calif.) blooped an RBI single into right field to drive home Berezay.
The duo of Baum and Berezay teammed up again in the third inning as Berezay lifted a two-out single to right. After Berezay stole second, Baum ripped a double into left field to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
Nevada answered with two runs in the third on a two-run RBI single Matt Suleski. The Wolf Pack, then took the lead in the fourth on a two-run single from Matt Bowman.
The Tigers offense went quiet until the eighth inning, when Pacific loaded the bases with no out as sophomore Adam Ching (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) reached on an error to lead off the inning. Senior Anthony Jackson (Modesto, Calif.) followed with a single through the right side, then Berezay drew a walk to load the bases. Two outs later, sophomore Brett Manning (Boulder, Colo.) drew a four pitch walk to pull Pacific within a run at 4-3.
That, however, was all the offense the Tigers could manage as Nevada'a Travis Sutton pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his first save.
Pacific junior Jake Wild (Kingsburg, Calif.) suffered the loss (1-2) as he allowed four runs on six hits and four walks in four innings.
Nevada's Ryan Rodriguez (2-1) picked up the win as he allowed just three runs on six hits in seven innings.
One of the bright spots for the Tigers was the performance of the bullpen as freshmen Match Lange (Lake Oswego, Ore.) and Joey Centanni (San Diego, Calif.) tossed four innings of scoreless relief. Centanni pitched the final three frames, retiring nine of the 10 batters he faced.
Pacific and Nevada will complete their three-game series on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 1 p.m.
