Tigers take second game against Cougars, 6-3, behind Massetti and twelve hits

Stockton, Calif. - Behind seven strong innings from senior Luke Massetti (Modesto, Calif.) and twelve hits, the Pacific Tigers defeated BYU, 6-3 on Friday, Feb. 10.

With the win the Tigers moved to 4-1 on the season, while BYU fell to 0-2.

The Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as BYU capitalized on a Pacific error when Jeff Hiestand drove a two run double into left field.

The Tigers responded in the bottom of the first as sophomore Adam Ching (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) drew a leadoff walk, then senior Jake Ross (Friday Harbor, Wash.) doubled to center, putting runners at second and third. Sophomore Justin Baum (La Mesa, Calif.) drove in Pacific's first run with a ground out, then senior Matt Berezay (Manteca, Calif.) tied the game with a single to right that plated Ross.

In the third inning, Baum put the Tigers ahead for good with his first home run of the season, a solo shot to lead off the third, making it a 3-2 contest. The Tigers added three more runs in the inning as Berezay and senior Ramon Glasgow (Stockton, Calif.) singled, then senior Will Brindza (Sherwood, Ore.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Freshmen Erik Hamren (Coto de Caza, Calif.) and Joe Oliveira (San Diego, Calif.) followed with run-scoring singles to push the Tigers lead to 5-2. One out later, Ching delivered an RBI single to give Pacific a 6-2 lead.

With the lead in hand, Massetti settled into a grove and held the Cougars to just two hits through the final six innings that he tossed. Massetti (1-0) retired the final 10 batters that he faced in route to his first victory of the season. For the game, he allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks, with seven strikeouts in seven innings.

BYU's Patrick Wells (0-1) suffered the loss as he allowed six runs on eight hits in two innings.

Berezay, Glasgow and Oliveira led the Tigers offensive with two hits each, while Baum led Pacific with two RBI.

Pacific and BYU will close out their series on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 1 p.m. in Stockton Ballpark.
