Berkeley, Calif. - The Pacific women's field hockey team dropped a tough 3-2 decision to No. 12 California on Saturday, Oct. 28.
With the loss the Tigers fell to 10-7 on the season and 4-2 in the NorPac Conference, while California moved to 13-4 overall and 6-0 in conference play.
The Tigers got on the board early in the first half of the contest looking to their leading scorer senior Vianney Campos (Guadalajara, Mexico) for an offensive spark. Campos responded with her 30th goal of the season just 4:37 into the game as she weaved her way through the Bears' defense and fired a shot into the back of the net to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
Holding the lead for much of the half, the Tigers relinquished the equalizer with just under three minutes remaining in the opening half, giving up the game-tying goal to Christina McGrath off of penalty corner. McGrath's goal was setup by Kellie York and Rachel Moffit who entered the ball and stopped the entrance of the penalty corner.
Tied at the half, the Tigers once again struck to take a one goal lead this time coming off of the stick of senior Jen Chaney (Campbell, Calif.). Chaney followed the lead of Campos, finding the back of the net on an individual effort that guided her through the opposition's defense. The goal was Chaney's third of the season.
Despite holding a one goal lead, Pacific could not hold on for the conference victory, giving up the game-tying goal with just over three minutes to play in the second half. The goal was scored by Jennifer Crane and assisted by Ashley Glosz. Heading into overtime, the Bears struck just :32 seconds into the extra period, finding their leading scorer, Valetina Godfrid, for the golden goal.
With the loss the Tigers will enter the NorPac Tournament as the No.3 overall seed and will be back in action on Thursday, Nov. 2 as they will face the No. 6 seed Appalachian State in the tournament's opening round.
