Berkeley, Calif. - With five goals from senior Vianney Campos (Guadalajara, Mexico), the Pacific field hockey team defeated Davidson 5-1, on Oct. 10 to capture their third consecutive NorPac victory. With the win the Tigers improved to 9-6 overall and 3-1 in the NorPac conference, while Davidson fell to 5-10 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
Campos' performance on Tuesday set a school record for goals in a game eclipsing the previous record of four goals that she had set in a contest against Appalachian State in 2005. Heading into this week, Vianney had scored the third most goals of any active player in the country and she now has an impressive 25 goals on the season.
Vianney's first goal for the Tigers came only 1:31 into the game after senior Jennifer Chaney (Campbell, Calif.) passed it to Campos at the top of the circle. Then, less than eight minutes later, her second goal was scored on a penalty stroke awarded to the Tigers after Davidson had fouled Chaney in front of the goal at the 9:11 mark.
Chaney and Campos ended up hooking up for the Tigers third goal as well as Campos one touched a pass from Chaney to put the ball in the back left side of the goal with 15:26 left in the first period. At the 20:53 mark however, Kayli Maxwell assisted Lauren Calve on a similar play that set up Davidson's only goal of the match to make the score 3-1.
Before the break, Campos' last goal of the first half came on assist from senior Marissa Atilano at the 23:56 mark. At that point the Tigers went into halftime with a three goal lead. After the break, Campos would score her final goal of the game on an assist from sophomore Ashley Niccum (Simi Valley, Calif.). The assist was the first of Niccum's collegiate career.
In total the Tigers out shot the Wildcats by a margin of 29-9 and they recorded an 11-6 advantage in penalty corners. Sophomore Kelly Miller (Monterey, Calif.) had three saves in the game as the Pacific defense allowed only four shots on goal.
Pacific will be back in action when they play Appalachian State at Brookside Field in Stockton, Calif. on Oct. 15 at 12:00 PM.
