Tigers stumble against Gauchos, fall 3-0

Santa Barbara, Calif. - The Pacific Tigers men's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss to UC Santa Barbara on Friday, Jan. 27. The loss dropped Pacific to 2-6 on the season and 1-4 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. UC Santa Barbara, meanwhile moved to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

Game scores for the match were 30-25, 30-27, 30-27.

The first game of the match was hard fought on both sides as the game featured 12 ties and three lead changes. Tied 25-25, the Tigers made three critical errors and UC Santa Barbara capitalized to claim a one game lead, 30-25.

Unfortunately for the Tigers, the momentum of game one carried into game two as Pacific fell behind 12-6 early. The Gauchos lead grew to as much as seven points at 21-14. Pacific got as close as two points at 29-27, however the Tigers could not claw all the way back.

The third and final game turned on a short burst from the Gauchos. Tied at 9-9, UC Santa Barbara scored six of the next eight points in the game to take a 15-11 lead. The Tigers got no closer than two points the rest of the way.

Freshman Joe Forbes (Westport, Conn.) and sophomore Pekka Seppanen (Kuopio, Finland) led the Tigers with eight kills in the match, while UC Santa Barbara's Evan Patek and Theo Brunner each finished with a match-high 12 kills.

Pacific will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 28 as the Tigers face Cal State Northridge at 7 p.m.
