The Pacific men's volleyball team fell 3-0 to the number one ranked Long Beach State 49ers on January 21. The Tigers, coming off their first conference win of the season against UC San Diego, failed to take a game from Long Beach State as they were defeated 23-30, 23-30 and 37-39.
The 49ers got out to an early lead in game one and never looked back, getting six kills from both Duncan Budinger and Robert Tarr. Although senior Brian Adamson collected six kills for the Tigers, they could get no closer than five points in the first set. At the outset of game two the Tigers jumped to a 4-0 lead and maintained their advantage until Long Beach State tied the game at 15. From there the 49ers, led by All-American setter Tyler Hildebrand, went on a 15-8 run to close out the game. The Tigers did get six kills from Andreas Baboulidis in game two.
During the final game the lead traded hands throughout the set as neither team could gain advantage down the stretch. The game pushed beyond 30 as both teams struggled to string together consecutive points. Adamson contributed a huge game for Pacific in the final set, accumulating 16 total kills on 33 attempts for a .333 hitting percentage. Baboulidis finished with 15 kills and Mitchel Hazelett recorded 45 assists on the night.
With the loss the Tigers fell to 1-3 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and 2-5 overall on the season. Pacific is next in action at UC Santa Barbara on January 27 and Cal State Northridge on the 28th.
