BERKELEY, Calif. The Pacific field hockey team lost an 8-1 contest to Iowa on Monday, Sept. 5. The loss dropped the Tigers to 2-3 on the season, while Iowa moved to 3-2.
The Hawkeyes got off to a fast start that they never relenquished. Iowa had three corners and five shots in the first four minutes of the game and the first of their eight goals came from Debbie Birrell with 27:12 left in the first half.
Iowa's Kadi Sickel scored less than four minutes later, Kara Zappone netted another goal less than eleven minutes after that and Birrell scored her second goal of the half with just under a minute to go.
Pacific jumped back into the game as sophomore Natalie Purcell (San Diego, Calif.) scored with 33:34 left in the second half off an assist from junior Jen Chaney (Campbell, Calif.).
However the Hawks built the lead as the second half progressed,courtesy of goals by Lauren Pfeiffer and Katie Naughton. With 10:30 left in the second half Kelly Slattery netted a goal off an assist from Caitlin McCurdy and 34 seconds later Birrell had her third goal of the game.
The Hawkeyes accumulated 25 shots to the Tigers' nine and had ten penalty corners to Pacific's three.
Pacific will be back in action on Thursday, Sept. 8 as the Tigers travel to Kentucky to face Louisville at 6 p.m. (ET)
