Berkeley, Calif. - The Pacific Tigers field hockey team dropped a 6-1 nonconference decision to Cal on Saturday, Oct. 6. The loss moved the Tigers to 5-7, while Cal is now 8-6.
The Tigers' fifth game at Berkeley this season was very much a tale of two halves as two of the NorPac's top scorers kept their teams close. Just over ten minutes into the game Cal's Valentina Godfrid netted her 19th goal of the season off an assist from Chilly Banuelos. Answering right back to keep Pacific in the game was junior Vianney Campos (Guadalajara, Mexico), who scored her 10th goal of the season in as many games.
The half ended with the score tied at one but the Bears had already out-shot the Tigers, 8-2 and attempted three penalty corners. Those stats proved to be a harbinger of things to come as Cal began to widen their lead in the second half.
Cal's Alexander Harkins scored her first goal of the season and Teela Crosthwaite and Valentina Godfrid would go on to score two goals each in the second half. The Bears ended the game with 23 shots to Pacific's four and six penalty corners while the Tigers attempted only one in the entire game.
The Tigers travel to Virginia this week, playing William & Mary at Williamsburg on the 13th, Virginia Commonwealth in Richmond on the 14th and a NorPac match-up with Davidson on Sunday, Oct. 16 before returning to California.
