STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific women's soccer program fought whistle-to-whistle in its home opener, falling short in a 2-1 decision to Nevada on Thursday night from Knoles Field.
The Tigers' (0-2) carried the pace and passion most of the night, but the late tallies by the Wolf Pack (1-0) ultimately earned the visitors the result.
Sophomore
Yohonna Bell netted first collegiate goal in the final minute before halftime, cutting hard to the goal and roofing a shot in to give Pacific a 1-0 lead before the break. For Bell, it marked her second straight match recording a point after earning a secondary assist against Sacramento State in the season opener. Bell recorded a team-high three shots on target in 66 minutes of action.
Freshman
Ava Wells was summoned for her first collegiate start in goal. Wells secured two saves off seven shot attempts by Nevada.
Aside from the Pacific goalkeeper, redshirt senior
Faylinn Berkowitz and freshman
Nora Cullen represented the only two Tigers to play the full length of the match.
Pacific and Nevada did not generate many scoring chances in the first half until Bell's icebreaker before halftime. Out of the second half gates, the Tigers quickly surged to creating opportunities, outshooting their opposition, 9-3, in the final 45 minutes.
In the 61st minute, a cross by a Wolf Pack attacker found the back post for Charlotte Bonney, who notched the game-tying goal.
Following a review in the 71st minute, Nevada was awarded a penalty kick, which was scored by Jasmine Navarro to give her team a 2-1 lead.
Pacific made a push in the final moments of the match, but could not come up with an equalizer, resulting in the 2-1 final.
The Tigers will turn their attention to next week's road trip, opening the journey at San Diego State on Thursday, Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. from the SDSU Sports Deck.
